Location Issue Solution
-
Hey! I can see the issue of Location Geotagging is a little janky. I sit at the same coffeeshop every morning to journal, but the location metatag will usually throw 2-3 different neighboring locations by default. I end up taking the extra step of clarifying that yes, I am at the coffeeshop.
Why not create a routine that sniffs out the probability that if these 3-4 locations are thrown as options, I’m *most likely* at the location from which I’ve already journaled over 100 times?
I love the location function, but like others here in the forum, am likely to just quit using it and have my geotag reflect that I’m at the brunch place, the butcher shop, or the florist- even though I’m at the coffeeshop in between all of these other businesses.
Thanks for your time!

Hi, @williamsteffey! Can you let us know which device you’re using so we can look into what might be happening?
-
Hi Cara!
Sure. I’m on my MacBook Pro with an M2 chip. Hope this helps, but my instinct tells me this is not a device specific issue. Do let me know what you find out. Thanks!

Same here. I have to manually enter location or I get the wrong one 90% of the time. Even at home, where I create most of my entries, I need to give the exact location. This feature is absolutely not correct, using an iPhone or iPad or MacBook.
And it is still not possible to enter multiple locations for a single entry, this is even worse. -
Honestly, I’m fine with the app’s inability to spread a single entry across multiple locations. That seems more like a good suggestion for future iterations. But yeah, the failure of Day One to identify that I’m at home, or the coffeeshop, where I journal daily is a failure of one of the basic features the app promises.
Again, the key is frequency. If the GPS throws 5 locations, have the metatag default to the location I’m most likely to be at. The data is right there.

Hello @williamsteffey,
We can only display what Apple gives us through their Maps API. You mentioned that it often gives neighboring locations. Are these locations stacked right on top of each other, or are they a bit spread out?

Hi Joey and thanks for the repsonse.
I get it’s an Maps API issue, but can’t you put in a routine *after* the map info gets pulled, and auto-select the most likely location based on the previous entry location selections? In most cases, I bet you will have a large data set, as users are most likely journalling from the same few places over and over.
Thanks,
William

Thanks for the thoughtful suggestion, @williamsteffey — that’s a great idea! I’ve added your feedback to our list of feature requests for future consideration.
-
I would like to reiterate this request; if there were “upvotes” to recommend something I would. I have the same issue at home, formerly with a MacBook (Late 2013) and now a MacBook M2. Day One used to latch onto the next door neighbor’s address, even though it’s not close. Lately it’s across the street, which is ludicrous given how far back my house is. I have over 2700 entries, and 95% of them are from my house. It would be nice to set a default location for anything within half a mile.
-
@brianwessels thanks for sharing that helpful context. I can confirm that your vote has been logged and will be considered by our developers.
-
Respectfully, this is not a “feature request” as much as a bug with one of your primary existing features.

One thing I’m curious about is why Apple’s own maps don’t have this problem. I suspect the API you’re using might involve coordinate system conversion.
