Local location for diary entries?

    Hello everyone,

I use Google Translate because my English isn’t that good…

I started writing a diary again when the DayOne app came to mind again. And so I remembered that I also used this when I was in Canada in 2015. Back then I had a MacBook with me to write my entries.

Now I wanted to see if I still have these entries somewhere. I think I didn’t sync these with a web service at the time. In any case, I couldn’t find a user account with my email addresses.

But when I opened the “Day One Classic” app on my iMac at home, a lot of entries appeared for a second – but they all disappeared immediately.

Now, how do I get these entries again?

I have a TimeMachine backup of this notebook and the home directory also backed up separately.

Is the diary saved in a file somewhere?

Does anyone know where or have any other tips?

    Many thanks for your help!

…is Google translate really so bad that no one can understand the text and help me?
It seems like questions in this forum are answered very, very quickly, which is great!
But my question is actually quite simple?

  • Hello @fishermansfriend546,

You’re right, this does sound like a Day One classic issue. Classic has not been updated since 2016 and has been officially retired.

We have some import options listed below. Please give them a try.

    iOS

    1. Download the new Day One from the App Store.
    2. Go to Day One > Settings > Import / Export and tap Import from Day One Classic.
    3. You will be prompted if you would like to import your journal. Tap Import. You’ll see a progress indicator.
    4. After the import is complete, your newly imported data will appear in a new journal titled Journal. If you’ve imported a journal previously, or already have a journal titled Journal, your imported data may appear in a journal titled Journal followed by a number.

The new Day One supports one journal with the Basic account status. Journals can be managed in Settings > Journals.

    macOS 12 or later

    1. The device will need to be signed into iCloud/App Store with your Apple ID
    2. Download the new Day One on your Mac. [Day One Mac](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/day-one/id1055511498?mt=12)
    3. Add the app to your dock.
    4. Open the Terminal app. It is in Applications > Utilities
    5. Paste this command and hit Return: open ~/Library/Mobile Documents/5U8NS4GX82~com~dayoneapp~dayone/Documents/
    6. It should open a Finder window with a folder. Let me know if it doesn’t.
    7. Copy that folder and paste to a folder like “Downloads” in Finder.
    8. Rename the folder “Journal.dayone” (replacing the underscore with a period).
    9. Accept the message in the dialog box.
    10. Open the new Day One.
    11. Click File > Import > Classic File and choose that file in the Downloads folder.

Looks like you want to retrieve your old diary entries, which is awesome. When I had a similar situation with my old laptop I kept thinking about all those memories stored away. What helped me was digging into my backups, just like your TimeMachine and home directory backups. Have you tried searching for specific file names or looking in the app’s settings for local storage locations?

If you’re still looking for a way to organize your findings, you might also consider using an online notepad. It can help keep things tidy and accessible.
