Is there a way to mark entries as ‘not yet complete’?
-
Hello.
I often start a journal entry at the time an event occurs, but then write it all up later, when I have the time to write.
So, when I start an entry I always suffix it with ‘tbc’ (to be completed), and then all I have to do to see the backlog which need working on is do a search for ‘tbc’. Or at least, I used to be able to do that.
But lately, Day One has been showing me pretty well ALL entries in that search result for ‘tbc’, and not just the ones with ‘tbc’ in them, which renders my system unworkable.
I suspect that the app is searching all the version histories for each entry, and all will at some point have ‘tbc’ in them. Is there a) any way to stop a search looking in previous version histories, and just on entries as they are?, or b) Does Day One have an integral way of marking entries as needing further work doing on them?

Hi @j6d6j2s2yd,
Thanks for reaching out. I was able to reproduce this issue on my end, on the latest version of Day One (v.2025.12) macOS app.
Do you remember when you first noticed this issue? It’d be very helpful if you remember which version of the Day One app you started seeing this issue.
Would you also share which platform you’re using the app on? Android, iPhone, macOS, Windows..?
Looking forward to your reply,

Hi @j6d6j2s2yd,
After investigating this, we suspect your search index is outdated. Would you rebuild the search index?
- On Mac, Settings > Support > Rebuild Search Index
- On iOS: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/troubleshooting/what-does-rebuild-index-do-ios-only/
The index should be updated shortly after the entry is changed, on the order of maybe a few seconds. If that’s not happening, let us know and we’ll investigate further.

I only started noticing it happening in the last couple of weeks, but of course it may have been happening without me noticing. I mainly update on my Macs and I’m currently on version 2025.12 (1669), but I cannot remember it having updated to that.
I followed the Rebuild Search Index instruction, and you’re right. That DID solve the problem. Thank you so much.
I have two Macs, and I update on both, so could one be ‘confusing’ the other?
Is it worth considering some kind of marker in the app for incomplete entries?

@j6d6j2s2yd Awesome! Glad to hear that did the trick. Thanks for letting us know.

Ah yeah, that’s a possibility for sure. If you removed the “tbc” suffix on one device, that might not sync immediately to the other device. Which is why if you search on the second device, it might still think the suffix still exist on that particular entry.

We’re happy to submit this feature request for you. Bear in mind, our developers prioritize features for each release based on how many requests we get for them. If this feature doesn’t receive many requests, the chance of it being incorporated into the app is slim.
In the meantime, as a workaround, you can use a Temporary Journal for your unfinished entries. Once you’re done, you can easily move the entry to its final or target Journal.
