Import from Obsidian

Loving the app so far. I am an Obsidian user and I need a method to import my data from Obsidian. I have reviewed the instructions and understand them but the required date format is too strict and will require some kind of scripting/bulk update to convert the files in my markdown files. Plus, DayOne doesn’t recognize a Markdown file.

Really need a more robust method to intake from other applications. If I can’t get my data in or out I am not going to subscribe.

What is your exact need ?
If you create a note in Obsidian, then “share” it to Day One then DO will get and the markdown syntax.
At least from iOS, as far as I can see.

My need is I have thousands of journal entries going back years that I painstakingly exported from OneNote and converted into Markdown files (and by Markdown files I mean ending with an .md extension, not Markdown in a .txt file) and I want to import those into DayOne.

And it’s been a few days since I looked at it but the instructions I believe needed the date in a particular format to know which day to apply the entry to (not an ISO date format, which would make the most sense) and the import dialog only recognizes .txt files not .md

I can work around all these things, but that’s kind of a high bar of entry for an app that wants a subscription fee and is about to be Sherlocked.

  • @jonesdjd4ce4e7c6d Thank you for asking!

Currently, we don’t offer an integration or import option from Obsidian. However, I’ll gladly pass this suggestion on to our team for consideration.

We always appreciate any other ideas you might have. Thanks once more!

I have the same issue with importing markdown files, each of which has the date embedded in the filename, e.g. 2023-04-22.md. The import interface only accepts plain text files, not markdown files. I too have a lot of files I’d like to import into Day One.

I am not worried about Day One getting sherlocked, as I think the APIs Apple is releasing are likely to make Day One an even better app. That noted, D1’s import and export functionality is, er, limited at best. Impoverished is another term that comes to mind.

  • Hello @johnlaudun,

Thank you for your feedback. I’ll pass this along to the team.
