How to add cover image

I have just installed Day One and am running it on a PC under Windows 10. On the home page, under Journal Settings, there is an option to Add Cover Image. Firstly, I am assuming that this cover image will appear on the small representation of a book cover. If I am wrong could you explain where I should be looking. Assuming that this was so, clicking on the words on the screen opened my file system. I chose a photograph but when I opened it a part of a large photo appeared on the screen. I then used Photoshop Elements 9 to greatly reduce the dimensions of the photo. On trying to use this photo there was no change from the previous attempt – still part of a large photo appearing. I would be grateful if you could explain what it is I am presumably doing wrong.

  • Hi @petronius9,

The cover page feature is for the web, Windows, and Android app use only.

It is not the same as adding a cover for printing your journal, which would be done at the checkout process: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/day-one-ios/book-printing/#edit-the-cover

I hope that helps! Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you for the rapid response. I probably didn’t give clear enough details so I’ll try to expand on them.

You mention that the Cover Page function is for use with, amongst others, Windows. If it helps I am using Day One in Windows 10, specifically Windows 10 Home, Ver 22H2, 64 bit operating system, x64 based processor. My One Day is Ver 1.0.1.

I didn’t want it on a printed journal, I simply wished to find out what I could do with the function. I saw the blue rectangle and assumed, for lack of any further knowledge, that it was a representation of a book and that “Add Cover Image” referred to putting an image on top of it, just for the visual effect. I could of course, be making a totally wrong guess.

Clicking on Edit Journal to the right of the blue rectangle gives a sub-menu, the bottom entry of which is Add Cover Image. To see what happened I clicked this. This opened up my File Explorer and the only assumption I could make was that I should select an image from amongst my files. I did so and selected a photo. For lack of any further instructions I clicked on it to open it which it did. The photo selected is attached as Fig 1.

Opening the image showed a large part of the photo. A screen grab is attached as Fig 2. Obviously I am making the wrong assumptions or doing something that I shouldn’t. I’m just interested in finding out where I’m going wrong.

  • Hi @petronius9,

Thank you for the feedback. For some context, this Cover Image feature is currently still under development, rolled out as an experimental feature along with others in Day One Labs. We appreciate your patience in navigating this feature.

To clarify, the Cover Image in this context is not like a cover of a book. Instead, this is more like a banner on top. As a result, you’ll see that the image is cropped if it doesn’t fit the horizontal banner image space.

I hope that helps! Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the reply. As it is not quite what I thought I will let it be. As I said, I was wondering if it would be worth while experimenting with and it looks like not. Plus as I’m just beginning with the app there are many much more useful things that I need to try out.
