Full-fat data download has killed the app

TLDR: downloaded all my full-fat data to enable full iCloud back-ups – but now the app is constantly crashing ….

I’m using an iPhone 14. I now have a lot of stuff on Day One and am keen to make sure that if there’s ever a worst-case scenario and their servers are compromised, I have an independent back up. Importantly, this needs to be full-fat rather than thumbnails. If you just back up your optimised local storage to iCloud, then iCloud will ONLY back up thumbnails and will have to go to Day One to restore up the full versions – so that means it’s critically reliant on Day One being available.

So I chatted to Day One and they agreed that to have iCloud back ups which were full-fat, I’d need to have full-fat content stored on my phone.

So I have unticked “optimise storage” and for the last day or so it’s been syncing away and I now have 21GB stored on my phone. There is room on the phone for this so that’s fine. This should mean the regular iCloud back ups back up the full resolution content now on my phone.

BUT – since I did this, the app just isn’t working. It’ll open, work for a few scrolls, and then it freezes solid. It then has to be hard-closed on the phone, and then if you open it, it does it again. It has become completely unusable.

My question then – can the app actually cope if there’s a lot of data on it? (I’ve tried switching the phone off then on again – no help). And if not, is there any way of performing a reasonbly regular, full-fat, back up which would be completely independent of Day One if the worst happened?

Would love to hear from Day One and from other Day One users.
