Feature Request: Search Handwritten Notes
-
So I love typing my journal entries when its something quick on the go with my iphone and incorporating a photo. DayOne would be absolutely perfect for me if I could insert my handwritten journals so that I could appreciate my handwriting alongside photos and have it searchable. It could be from identifying handwriting on a picture to allowing me to import from Notability or Goodnotes. There is something about handwriting that allows my thoughts to flow easier. Can this be a feature in the near future? I would love to have all my Journals compiled in one place and also have the capability of printing it when it’s all compiled.

I can see how nice that would be! We do offer a similar feature on Day One Premium on iPads: Scribble. Scribble lets you handwrite notes with an Apple Pencil then converts it to searchable text. You can learn more at https://dayoneapp.com/guides/tips-and-tutorials/drawing-in-day-one-for-ios/
I’ve also shared your exact request here with our team to consider as a future expansion of our support for handwritten entries.

I’d like to plus 1 this request! Scribble is cool, but it completely changes your handwriting into the typed text, so you can’t see your handwriting anymore. I like to handwrite some text and sometimes doodle something in apps like Apple Notes or Goodnotes on my iPad, and like that the text it can recognize is searchable. And it’s nice to look back at the handwriting. It would be so great if Day One could also recognize hand written words in the same way!

Yes yes yes to this request! I am very much a hybrid journaler, and I often think about trying other services (and have tried) other ones who do have OCR capabilities. I would love to be able to scan my handwritten entries without having to add tags or keywords to search later.

Yes same! The draw feature doesn’t really cut it. I want to be able to actually journal handwritten! It’s a totally different experience to hand write your thoughts. It’s been proven to even utilize different parts of your brain so the resulting entry is different in content. It’s what I feel like I’m missing when I journal in day one.

Hi @ccubed33 Just adding a note here that Day One’s “Scan Text” feature can sometimes turn handwritten text into text. The feature uses your camera to “scan” the document to find identifiable text, then that text can be transferred to Day One. It’s a workaround for now, but thought I would mention it! You can find this feature in the entry editor > more > Scan Text.

much needed feature. I’d like to catalog my written journals so they come up in memories. But would also love to search and those entries be included. It’s a feature that’s been a round for a good while in other apps. Please consider.

Amen to this request! Like an earlier poster, I’m a hybrid journaler; sometimes I feel like typing, other times I feel like writing by hand. I know Scribble works, but that’s not what I’m looking for – I’d like Day One to preserve my handwriting, not just convert it to text. I’ve experimented with writing in a different app and copying my handwritten entries into Day One; it works, but it’s not the same – and if I’m going to write my journal in another app, why not just keep it there completely? I like Day One very much but find myself not using it much lately because of this.

+1 on this!! Being able to handwrite journal entries that include a searchable text layer (via handwriting recognition) would make DayOne the perfect app for my journaling needs. I like being able to see my handwriting and doodles on the page but still have an underlying searchable text layer for finding entries and unearthing ideas. The app Goodnotes comes to mind as an example of a software with this functionality.

is there any update on this? This is possible in Evernote and would be good to see this functionality in Day One

+1 me as well. I have stacks of old journals and while I can scan and attach them, their content isn’t searchable. I’ve taken to dictating them into Day One which is not ideal.
