Feature Request: Random Entry

    Hey DayOne Team!

I’ve been using your app since 2016 and it’s been a lifesaver for me! I love adding inspiring quotes to my entries and the “On This Day” feature always motivates me.

I was thinking, wouldn’t it be cool to have a ‘Random Entry’ option? It would be fun to revisit unexpected moments from the past and keep my diary experience fresh and exciting!

Thanks for considering my suggestion! Have an awesome day!

Oh, that is an interesting idea! That could be really fun for our long term Journal writers.

I’ll share your idea with the team for further consideration. Thank you for taking the time to share it with us :-)

I’ve had the same idea for awhile but just found this forum! It would be great to get a Random Entry tool, with filters to skip specific Journals (or posts that you’d rather NOT be reminded of)

It’s great to meet someone with the same feeling! Filters sound cool; it would be even more beneficial if we could exclude certain tags as well.

  • @smpage I’ve gone ahead and added your comments to the feature request as well!

I would love this feature as well ! Please 🙏

The random entry is a nice idea.
I was able to create an Apple shortcut which opens a random note from my journals.
If there is no note for the random day, then I run it once more.
It takes 2 seconds to open on iPhone/iPad.

Woaw this is really clever! Can you explain a bit more? I’m not really familiar with “shorcuts”

Apple shortcuts allow you to automate tasks on your iOS device.
You need to understand how shortcuts are created, or to copy an existing one provided by someone else.
Launch the Shortcut app to know more about this.
I cannot add pictures here but I can provide a screenshot of the shortcut.
Let me know if you need further infos

Thanks you very much for your answer, I will have a look to this app and if I struggle too much I’ll probably wright here ;)

hello it’s me again. I tried but didn’t succeed.

    • I go to the iOS Shortcuts app.
    • I navigate to ‘Automation’ and press the ‘+’ sign.
    • I set a time of day to run the shortcut (18:30, every day, and I activate ‘Execute Immediately’).
    • Then I press ‘New Empty Automation’.
    • Add an action.
    • From the list of suggested apps, I select ‘Day One’.
    • I press ‘Open Entry’.

but from here I really don’t know what to do…

You can try to import my shortcut in your iOS device.
Click on the link : https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/29985a2254af4a91a1fd4fad5a539298
This is a french version but it should run on a US device.
You will have to authorize Shortcut to access Day One data the first time.
    let me know.
I am not an expert in Shortcut, I tried to adapt another one to build this one.
I also have one which displays entries based on different periods : last month, last quarter, last semester … and one which displays entries by templates.

BTW, @staff-mobilefox could help as it seems that the Day One shortcut for search entries has evolved and « all journals » is not available anymore ??

Thank you so much! It works perfectly, and I’m French too, so it’s not a problem for me. It’s a good way to read random notes, but you need to have several notes. So, if the developers implement this feature one day, it will be great to open only entries with content… Thank you 😉

Today, I spent some time looking for an email address to contact the Day One team and suggest a new feature, until I came across this forum. The On This Day function is absolutely amazing – it brings back great memories every time I open the app. But I was thinking, wouldn’t it be great to have a Random Entry option as well?

I’ve been using Day One since the very first version, back when it was a one-time purchase with no subscription model. Over the years, it has become an essential part of my routine. Every time I check On This Day, I relive moments from the past, but having a Random Entry option would add a great touch of serendipity to the experience. I really think it would be a fantastic addition to the app!

  • Thanks for sharing your shortcut, @jcdichant!

@fourche2velos and @andrefernandozen, I’ve also made sure to add votes for the random entry feature on your behalf.
