Feature Request: Linking enties, with backlinks

It would be super helpful if Day One had a simple way to easily reference existing entries. Entries could then show incoming links in a backlinks section.

This would allow to refer back to memories from the past. And when browsing past memories, backlinks would reveal those entries, that mentioned them.

This is such a common pattern in almost any modern note-taking app and I miss it dearly in Day One.

I’ve got good news for you :-) We already have this feature in Day One. Here’s the guide on how to use it: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/tips-and-tutorials/linking-journal-entries/

You should be able to link back to prior entries within your current one following that guide to copying and pasting in Entry IDs. Let me know if it gives you any trouble.

If you look at Obsidian or Craft or any other modern note taking app you will find it much easier to backlink to other notes.

You could implement searching for an entry with the / command. Of as I did recently, I was writing about an earlier date it would be cool just to tag the date, to see everything I wrote that day.

In other apps also when you backlink to something, the note itself that you backlinked to tells you that what note that links to this particular note.

  • We’d be happy to forward this over to the team for future consideration.

@staff-mobilefox thanks, but as @veganmanftw pointed out the current implementation is lightyears behind apps like Craft, Obsidian, Roam, Reflect, Bear (as of 2.0) and many more. What is needed is a simple way to trigger a search for an entry one wants to link to, right from the flow of righting, as well as automatic backlinks shown on the page the link leads to.

I understand now what you’re asking for is an improvement for the existing feature for linking between entries, not for a new feature. I’ll share your words with our team for how we can improve.

It worked flawlessly for first years of D1. Let me explain.

The iOS version create a markdown link with the entry ID and the title of the entry which looks like a hyperlink which is amazing and I use it every single day to link all my psychology data research together. And the macOS app used to do it by the past. But not anymore! Now it only an address that is generated like this:

    <dayone://view?entryId=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Which is unusable for me. I then need to have my iPad or iPhone next to me to generate a markdown that contain that link behind the title of its entry. It is annoying.

And the macOS used to do it exactly like the iOS. I don’t understand why the dev team went back to the stripped down version link only version.

Could we make it back on macOS back please ?

    Same request here.
Actual implementation exists but is almost unusable on a daily basis.
Obsidian type of linking is really fast and efficient.
You type in [[ and a list of entries appears, in which you can select a note or add a search term.
This would be a useful add on to DO.

  • I’ll add your vote for this to be considered.

Hello! Is this active? I want to echo the others. The use case for ease of linking as described above is strong in Day One – I would expect you to be on to this right now as leaders in the journal space. Are you? Apple notes is even doing it in their native, free app (triggered by >>)

Please can you update us all on the status of this request? Is it being worked on? When will it be released? If it’s not being worked on, why is that?

    Thanks so much

From your premium customer of over a decade who loves you very much but is getting increasingly frustrated

  • @siobhanny37 Yep, it’s active, and we’re still recording requests for the team’s consideration.

We do not have any status update at this time.

@staff-reid, is there something like User Voice available for voting on feature requests? Or should I just mention my interest in back linking support here?

  • Unknown's avatar

Please add my vote for this as well.

  • Unknown's avatar

@kherge, we don’t use User Voice or similar platforms for feature request voting. Your interest has been duly noted, and I’ve added your comment as a vote in favor of the feature.

@zwsqgqjcwn, I have added your comment as a vote for the feature as well.

I also vote for easier backlinking!

I’m starting to feel like we’re talking to the staff at Cultured Code. Count me as another +1–whatever good that is.

I am another longtime user who would also find this very useful. I currently do some linking between entries but it’s cumbersome.

  • Hello @rytnzytvv4 and @jeremywbaker!

I’ll forward this over to the feature request!

I’m starting to feel like we’re talking to the staff at Cultured Code. Count me as another +1–whatever good that is.

We receive many feature requests each day and record every request for the team to review when looking into new features to add. I know you may not see it here in this forum, but they are documented and recorded. Every single one.

One more vote for such a feature.
Using / and typing a title or any other significant word could display a list of notes, then you can add the note link in the actual note.
The Obsidian way of implementing this is fine.
