Entry keeps closing as I type

I use an iPad air (locked in landscape mode), and docked to an Apple Magic Keyboard and lately (but not every time), when I open a prior entry to type and amend the entry, after every few letters typed, the entry automatically closes (as if I had hit the DONE button in the upper right corner). Therefore, I can only enter a few letters before the document or journal entry closes and I cannot type any more without opening the document to edit again.
This has perhaps happened 3 times this week.
It seems that if I force close the app and then open it again, often this fixes it and I can type normally. Any suggestions. I think this had happened in the remote past as well, and at that time it seemed to start after an update and was fixed by another update.
and again…this is intermittent, and does not seem to happen every time.
