Editing Shared Journal Entry Permission

Voting for this feature too! Our family does a photo project every year called Week in the Life to capture everything we do in a week with journal entries and photos. Now that the kids are older, they have their own activities, and I want them to add their own thoughts and stories to the family project.

Thanks for the work you do on the app! I’ve been using it for over 10 years and the moments I’ve recorded have been priceless. “On this Day” makes it so easy and fun to see what was happening in my life and how I’ve grown.

It does say you can comment on other people’s entries, just not edit them directly. That sounds like a very fun project! One of my sons lives in Minnesota (I’m in Indiana), so that would make it easy to collaborate long distance. I just started using the app this year and I’m hoping they add all of the functions to the Android version too.

Shared Journals allow you to comment and react to entries. Add your comments to engage in conversations, provide feedback, or simply express your thoughts and feelings about an entry. Reactions are a quick and easy way to show your appreciation or emotional response.”

I also would like to add my support for this feature. I expected a shared journal to act like a shared google doc would, where I as the “premium user” can share the journal with one or more “free users” and can specify the “permission levels” for the free users e.g. “read-only”, can edit but premium user can edit / delete the free user’s edit /entry. This functionality would make the shared journals so much more useful and broaden their use to include a “project reporting vehicle” on a one-to-many basis

    Another vote for this!

I thought shared journal meant it was an ACTUAL shared journal and signed my husband up for an account. We’re using it to make daily journals like milestones for the baby, quotes by the toddler, and journal entries of our travels that we want to each contribute to. Then for our personal entries we’ll keep in the not shared folder. Imagine my surprise when I was talking him into adding to it when he wasn’t able to 😆 we switched to day 1 from Notes (bc it was getting crowded) but it seems like we may need to switch back to be able to add to the same entry!

Can someone answer why this is a complicated request? If there’s a way to click “editable” under the journal entry I would be a happy camper! I don’t see how this isn’t already a feature, especially as this thread is 2 years old almost!

    I’m a ex-user – just wanted to chime in.

Don’t expect to have this feature land anytime soon – it seems the dev team is swamped and doesn’t have time to prioritize it.

As a software engineer myself – I suspect there’s an architectural issue that makes this difficult to add. If the app was built correctly, it should be as simple as adjusting a permission, but I’m assuming something significant needs to be rebuilt to allow read/write access for both parties.

All that to say – my partner and I gave up on Day One after a year of asking for this feature, and decided to go with a good ole scrapbook. Shared editing is not landing anytime soon – and it’s no one’s fault – they just have bigger fish for them to fry.

Thanks so much for the reply! I assumed it would be as easy as that too! Fingers crossed it’s a feature that’ll land with others this year 😁

  • Thank you for your feedback about the editing options for Shared Journals. I’ve added your votes to this feature request so our team can take this into consideration as they plan new app updates.

Please add another vote for this. Would love it if I could turn permission on for certain documents to allow for collaboration within that post.

  • Thanks @sublimec66df5cb1e – I have added your vote to the feature request.
