Did anything change recently around location handling?

    Hi,

I made sure multiple times that “auto-apply points of interest” is off.

And yet during the last few days I keep getting the location of some “point of interest” place that is nearby to where I am, but not where I am. Can you please tell me how to make this stop? I just want my location to reflect where I am instead of setting it to the address of such-and-such business that is hundreds of meters away.

    Thank you!

To add to this, I said “recently” but I don’t know when it started happening, I only noticed it in the past few days but in theory it could have been there for longer. But it definitely wasn’t always like this, and I would think the behaviour was different (i.e. correct) a few months ago, although I can’t pinpoint an exact date.

  • Hi @zq6t9fg9gb

Could you please let us know which version of the Day One app you are currently using?

Also, have you tried naming your location? https://dayoneapp.com/guides/tips-and-tutorials/saved-named-locations/

But I don’t want to name my locations, I want to have my coordinates be those of the place I am at in that particular moment. To give an example, there was a playground sort of in the area where I was (let’s say 300m or so, possibly more as I am not good at estimating distances, but it was definitely not close). It used to be that when I created an entry, my location was where I was, and if it couldn’t identify anything beside me (impossible in this case, I was on a street so worse case scenario I should have gotten a street address, like 5 Street Name) it used to just show the coordinates. And now it showed the playground name, which again was not exactly close to me. I really, really don’t want this behaviour, I want the location to just be where I am (surely you’d expect this to be the default?).

This happened to me more than once and in multiple places, so it’s not something specific to that situation, I just gave it as an example.

The reason I can’t name my locations is that the whole point of me using a journaling app on the phone is that I can write things in places I am passing through and when I think/notice something interesting. So if I am in a place for the first time, obviously naming a location (into what?!) really does not help, especially if I am fost example on the train when I don’t have the time to set up finicky things.

The version of the app I was using when I posted was the most recent at the time (there’s been a new update since).

Can’t you guys just add an option for the location to be where I am without any weird inferences? Just put a setting somewhere, “always exact location” or something like it. As a developer myself, I know that sometimes when users think something is easy that’s not always the case; however I find this really important, as to be honest one of the main reasons why I am using the app is being able to pin entries to locations, and then see them on the map. But it’s not as valuable if the locations are skewed, you know? :(

  • @zq6t9fg9gb Thanks for the additional context. Those all make sense.

Could you kindly confirm if you have the Location History setting enabled? If you turn it off, does it change anything?

If there’s no difference, could you try reproducing this issue and record your screen while doing so? Once you’ve done that, could you please upload the screen recording and the diagnostic file from your device at https://dayone.me/support?

Also, please include the Entry ID of your test entry. You can find the guide here – https://dayoneapp.com/guides/troubleshooting/locating-an-entry-id/.

We’ll use all this information to look into this matter. Thanks a lot!
