Dayone Mac not picking location data from iPhone Photo?

  • Unknown's avatar

Sometimes, when I add an entry into Dayone on the Mac I’ll add a photo which is usually taken with the iPhone (also running Dayone).

Sometimes it will include the location data from the photo (asking me if I want to update the time and location from the photo), and sometimes it doesn’t.

Today, it didn’t. I just looked at the photo in question in the Photos app on the Mac. When it’s opened it shows the date, time and location. So, the info is there. Just wondering why DayOne isn’t picking it up.
    Thanks
    Martin

  • Hello @marts57!

When this happens, can you right-click on the photo and see location information at the top of that menu? You should see a location there. Take a look at the screenshot below if you’re not sure where to look.

    Hi.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah, I’ve just tried that. The Dayone entry in question (the one which prompted me to ask this here) has all the location/time/date info.

But, as I wrote above in the first post, one photo that I imported had all the info but Dayone didn’t ask me if it wanted to update time/date and location info. And herein lies the mystery – if the info is available, especially time/date which is always there, why doesn’t Dayone ask me each time? It’s only doing it randomly.

Note: I’m talking about Dayone for Mac here. Lots of my entries are done at home and using photos taken on the iPhone. So, I’ll be entering the dayone entry some time after the photo was taken the location of which will also be somewhere other than at home. So Dayone sometimes asks me to update with photo info, sometimes not.

    Thanks.

  • @marts57 I’ve tested this several times and cannot reproduce this just yet.

Does this happen each time with that same photo mentioned above?

I don’t think this will be the issue since it seems to work with some of your photos, but could I have you check a setting in the Photos App on your Mac?

Photos App > Settings > Include location information

Is that setting checked on your Mac?

    Hi.

Thanks again for looking at this.

I just checked that setting in the Photos app. It wasn’t checked. It is now. I’ll see how it goes with some photos from today (I’m attending a charity fund raiser so I’ll be taking photos).
    Regards

    Update:

I took some photos at varying times during the event.

I’m home now and I’ve updated Dayone with journal entries and using photos from the morning.
In both entries I added the photos from the “add from media today” option. In each case when I right clicked on the photo there was no info, then it updated shortly after. And in the right-click menu there is the option to update the journal entry with the photo info which I did.

Entry 1 Photo info was in the correct place. But Entry 2’s photo added the wrong location to it. I was able to correct that by the “change location” edit option and entering in the place which Dayone found and applied.

Note: whenever I try to do this on the iPhone app it invariably fails with either me unable to add a new location to what I guess is a database of some sort, or if I do change say, “Joe’s Diner” to Fred’s BBQ Store” it will default back to “Joe’s Diner” which may not be anywhere near Fred’s shop.

For this reason I often edit journal entries when I get home on the Mac.

  • @marts57 I haven’t been able to replicate either of these behaviors:

    • Location info not immediately being present in the photo added from the iPhone
    • Wrong location is added from the photo

So, this is a bit tricky to troubleshoot. Just to cover all our bases here, however, can you please share the following information?

  • Unknown's avatar

    MacOS Sequoia 15.5
    iOS 18.5.

  • Thanks @marts57

Can you also confirm the version of Day One you have on macOS? https://dayoneapp.com/guides/settings/locating-the-version-number-of-day-one/

Also, can you consistently replicate the issue if you try adding the affecting image to another new entry?

  • Thanks for those additional details, @marts57!

I wanted to let you know that Day One for Mac version 2025.11 has started rolling out in a phased release. This version includes a number of under-the-hood updates that may help.

If you’re not seeing the update just yet, it should become available to you soon as the rollout continues.
