Day One won’t add my location in my journal entries.

Good morning. Within the past few days I have noticed that Day One no longer auto adds my location. Location is turned on for the app in the System Privacy menu and also to auto add within Day One menus. Apple Maps shows my correct current location as well. I am using Day One version 2024.0 (1557). Am I missing something or doing something wrong? Thank you.

Sorry forgot to add I’m talking about the Mac desktop version of the program, I said “app” mistakenly.

    Hi @njdmmoe,

Would you mind updating your Mac app version to 2024.9 and let us know if you are still having that issue?

It’s odd. My Day One on my MacBook Air updated my location when I was in Massachusettes this week on a short vacation, then went back to no updating my location when I got home. Very mysterious. My Day One program and my MacBook Air are all updated to the latest software versions too.

    Hi @njdmmoe,

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. I will report it to the development team, but I have a few questions to help us understand the problem better.

    • Is this happening on all devices where you use Day One?
    • Are you consistently using Day One in both locations?
    • Do you have your home location saved as a Saved/Named location?

I look forward to your response.

I almost exclusivly use Day One on my Macbook Air. I just made an entry from my iPhone and it listed latitude and longitude but not the name of the apartments that I live in or “home.” It seems like my Macbook entries are recording this as well but not displaying the coordinates on the bottom of my entries so I can’t set this location to home as you suggested. I dont have my location saved as home either because the methods you linked don’t seem to work for me.

I make an entry in my Gratitude Jounral every morning so I went back and found that March 15th of this year was the day my location stopped being recorded, if that helps at all. It seems to come back suddenly about May 11th but it’s inconsistent and not always listing it the same. Sometimes it does named it as “Home” which I hadn’t set yet, sometimes it names it my apartment complex, sometimes it’s just coordinates.

OK this is even weirder. I was able to set my current locatoin as “Home” in the iOS app, and now when I create a new journal entry on my MacBook Air it is recording my location, entited “home,” on the bottom of my entry. I’m not sure if this has been solved so to speak but I do have location again.

    Hi @njdmmoe,

Thank you for the update! We are happy to hear that the issue seems resolved for now. Please keep an eye on it and let us know if you encounter any further problems.

    Thanks!

I have a similar issue with a Mac Studio 2022 M1 Max. I’m running Sequoia 15.0.1, but haven’t had the location services auto populate the address for many months. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app, but still have no luck. I have to manually edit the location every time.

I checked that the location services are on. They are. Any other things I should check?

@dujones1! Do you use WiFi or Ethernet for your connection on Mac? If you open the Apple Maps app, does it show your correct/current location?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi helper-james, I use Ethernet (and WiFi + BlueTooth mostly for AirDrop).

When I open Apple Maps it does show my current location, although it is “fuzzy” as it is a bigger circle than my home address.

I checked that Location Services is toggled on for DayOne, but if there’s an issue with determining the exact location on Apple Maps, is that driving the issue in the Day One app?

There could be an issue with Day One. but it could also be an issue with Apple Maps on Mac. I was under the impression they use Apple Maps API for location data. WiFi is needed for this data as it won’t work on Ethernet alone.
