Day One on macOS defaults to displaying old entry? + AI Assistant was unhelpful
-
I’m currently using Day One 2023.19 (1508) on macOS Sonoma 14.0.
I’ve found that, whenever I open the Day One window on my Mac, it always defaults to a specific entry from a day in the past. For the past several days, it’s been August 31; I think I remember before that date, there was some other day it kept going to, but I don’t remember what it was. Is this a bug, or is it expected behavior? If the latter, is there a way for me to change the day it defaults to (such as having it open to the current date)?
As a side note, I might encourage Day One/Automattic to avoid using an AI support chatbot. I asked it about my problem and it basically just told me “go to Preferences and see if there’s an option there to fix your problem”.

There is no “Preferences” menu in Day One (it’s instead titled “Settings…”), there’s no option in the “General” section to change the default entry/startup behavior, and there’s no “Reset” or “Restore Defaults” button that I could find. The only thing it was useful for was telling me that I needed to look deeper into actual support channels.

Hello @malcolminyo. We appreciate you reaching out.
This has been a known issue affecting some users and we have had trouble reproducing it. We have some steps that should resolve this locally though.
- Close the entry by clicking the X at the top left of the entry.
- Switch to the Timeline view. https://dayoneapp.com/guides/tips-and-tutorials/journal-views-in-day-one-for-macos/
- Close the app
- Re-open.
Let us know if that helps.

That’s a great call-out. As there is not a specific help guide for this issue, it appeared it provided some outdated information. Our Day One AI Support Assistant is still being fine-tuned, so apologies for any confusion caused.

I’m so sorry for the late reply – I must have somehow missed the notification that there was a reply to my post. Following those steps fixed my issue, though – thanks for providing them! :)
