Day One Missing Journal Entries
-
I haven’t used Day One in a bit, I decided to start up again. I had always used my finger print to sign on with my Mac. I have a new Mac laptop and I haven’t signed in with this device. When I did there are zero entries. All of my journal entries are gone. I tried syncing with iCloud and nothing. I did not backup to anything. Is there anything to be done? Any tips? It would be a total bummer to have lost these. Thanks in advanced.

We will do all we can to help. It depends on how long ago you were using Day One. If it was before February 2016, you would want to try these recovery options: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/day-one-classic/day-one-classic-version-1-recovery-options
If you were using Day One some time after February 2016, please try as many of these recovery options: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/troubleshooting/data-loss-and-recovery-options/
Let us know if those help!

So, I tried the recovery options without success. I used Day One beginning in the fall of 2021 for about a year. I read that it automatically syncs to iCloud when you download it, but you can’t sync across devices unless you have premium. Is that why I don’t have those entries? Because I’m on different device? If I sign up for premium will I gain access and also be able to get better support for recovery even if I didn’t have premium prior? Thank you.

Sorry to hear that!
I read that it automatically syncs to iCloud when you download it
We don’t use iCloud for sync, but users can sign in to a Day One account to back up to our sync service from one device for free. It is possible to use the app without being signed in, in which case the data is stored locally and not backed up to the cloud. Can you sign in to https://dayone.me/login and see your data? https://dayoneapp.com/guides/day-one-sync/how-do-i-know-if-my-data-is-synced/
Premium is not required to recover data.
In addition to our sync service, Apple does allow users to back up app data to iCloud using the device backups. Was the new device set up from a recent iCloud backup of the previous device? https://dayoneapp.com/guides/tips-and-tutorials/backing-up-day-one-data-to-icloud

I didn’t do a full transfer from my old Mac to my new one, but whatever I had in iCloud is still available to me. When I log into Day One I don’t have any old entries. I always signed in to use it….I think I guess it’s possible I didn’t sign in? I’m so confused now. Where could they be? I thought they automatically stored in iCloud when you use Day One. I have other old journal apps like Penzu that I have used in the past, I’m still able to see those entries, even years later. I just don’t get it…

Thanks for the additional information.
Day One does not back up data to iCloud on Mac. Data is stored locally on the hard drive and, if you sign in to a Day One account, on our servers.
Is there a Time Machine backup available from the previous Mac? Details on recovering data from Time Machine can be found in this guide: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/troubleshooting/data-loss-and-recovery-options/

Hi! I’ve been using DAY ONE since 2014 on my iPhone, and have had several phones since 2014, and all entries have remained from phone to phone.
I just updated to Premium with the desire to use the Day One journal on my Mac laptop. However, after installing the app, not all entries appear on the laptop. The last two years seem to be missing. I do not want to update the version on my phone just yet, fearful that I will loose two years worth of entries.
Any suggestions?

Hi @tere789
I’ve been using DAY ONE since 2014 on my iPhone
Since you’ve been using Day One since 2014, could you please confirm whether you’re still using Day One Classic on your phone, or if you’ve switched to Day One 2.0?
To find out which version you’re currently using, you can follow this guide: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/settings/locating-the-version-number-of-day-one.
Once we know which version you have, we’ll be able to help you with the next troubleshooting steps. Thanks!
