Day One has been Sherlocked. Make no mistake.

I can’t help but wonder if Apple’s recent announcements about their new ‘Journal App’ was the much needed candle that needed to be lit under the asses of our good friends at Day One.

I know that Day One’s CEO released a letter responding to it with a very positive spin, but one must wonder if that’s all just his way of dealing with being Sherlocked by Apple. Make no mistake, they were 100% Sherlocked here.

Be that as it may, I’ve asked for a Day One basic web UI for years. I’ve asked publicly, privately, collaboratively, and got no where. Each time I was shut down by Day One leadership explaining that this isn’t a viable way of journaling and that they had no desire or interest in entertaining it.

Meanwhile today I find out they’ve published a BETA browser interface since the Apple Journal announcement. Makes you wonder,…..

Yep. DayOne is going to lose a lot of users to Apple in the near future, unless they offer something for the hefty price.
    I would like to see

    Cleaner UI
    Backlinks
    Person tagging

    Just to name a few

OK, so I ‘now’ see this slightly differently, having initially shared your view(s) – post Apple announcement.
I don’t think Day One will loose too many customer as from what I’ve seen and read the apple journaling app will not ‘initially’ be a directly competitive interface. Think we all forget just how user friendly and super slick Day One is – it’s a truly fantastic app.
Guess it now depends on how Automattic view Day One after two years of ownership,’ and how much investment/resource they’re prepared to put in. Apple have certainly thrown down the Gauntlet….

Here’s our official blog post response to the Apple app being announced: https://dayoneapp.com/blog/apple-journaling-app/?fbclid=IwAR3iM-fxubz8aqnrth8YOke3tg1oFjdJjxhLoFTM6lob2zrhbofHf1Uc2lA.

Below are just my opinions that I’ll add.👇

The most obvious differentiator Day One has from Apple is their apps work on non-Apple devices and on the Web. This is especially crucial for those who wish to share their entries with others who may not have Apple devices with the upcoming shared journals feature. It’s also nice to not have to worry that your memories are tied to the Apple ecosystem, at least for me.

Overall the way we’re very optimistic that the basic app that Apple provides will just get people more interested in journaling and many people will “upgrade” to Day One once they want more features. Much like you would do with Apple Notes then decide you want to use one other of the more advanced note taking apps that are provided by other developers.

Not ready to switch to Apple journal, but I will consider this of course like anyone here I suppose.
To me the difference will be with DO attitude, user feedback listening, dedicated and reactive support. These are not Apple strengths from what I can see.
My points of attention will also be DO journal export, editing and printing, which is not at the right level at the moment to me.

Additional note about exporting and printing, MS-Word format would be nice, does not seem to be such an issue when you are already able to export to PDF, Journey has this feature too : https://journey.cloud/app/plugins/export-to-docx

Yea but many people are going back to Apple Notes since its in line with their design language and for its simplicity.

A fair enough view back in September, but it’s turned out that DayOne and Apple collaborated on the Journaling Suggestions API and the latest release of DayOne has added it.

The Journal app itself is little more than a demo for the Journaling Suggestions API, and is basically unusable. See my article here.

Maybe Apple will continue to enhance Journal in the next few years and your prediction could still come to fruition.
