Dark Mode icon for macOS (Tahoe)

I would like to request that the dark mode icon used on the iOS version of the app could also please be added to the macOS app please?

As things are currently the app icon in the dock remains light blue and white when others transition to dark, so it ends up sticking out like a sore thumb!

    Thank you for considering this!

  • Hi there, @2cbf6g27z2

We appreciate the idea. I have added this to our ideas board for consideration. We will look into adding this icon to our macOS app in a future update :)

Sorry, what consideration do you mean? Your app is subscription based. In what else the money should go? This is not some student project, or an app with one time payment. Is subscription for a glorified text editor not enough today? Dark icon is an officially supported feature of new systems. You are considering this?

  • Hi @trollcz,

I can’t speak for our development and design teams, but we have shared your feedback with them, which they do take into consideration customer feedback when planning for new updates.

The current Day One icon sticks out like a sore thumb in dark mode on macOS Tahoe, with the icon and widget style in System – Appearance set to “Dark”. The Day One team needs to catch up with the rest of the apps here that have already offered a dark mode icon for dark appearances.

Dark mode icon changes are not automatic on macOS the way they are in iOS.

There are quite a number of Apple icons, which are bright and do not change – Reminders, Calendar, Notes, etc.

You might be referring to a previous version of macOS, on Tahoe this has changed, and all the Apple app icons change with dark mode now.

I see this thread has been marked as solved, this is not correct. The app continues to lack a dark mode icon.

  • Unknown's avatar

Who marked this as solved? Day One does NOT have a dark mode icon yet.

The dark mode icon is NOT automatic on macOS. The developer of the app needs to design one and then include it with the app. The developer of Day One has NOT done this yet. Once they do, the icon will then change when the system enters dark mode.

  • Hi @2cbf6g27z2 and @jeffccw758,

It may have been marked as solved by mistake. We have logged all of the request for the design and development teams consideration, but I do not have an ETA for this being added at this time.

I have spent a frustrating half-day on one of my apps. As was pointed out, it is possible to have auto detection with file from Icon Composer, except you cannot generate appearances from within that app. The JSON rules have not been published by Apple, but have been reverse engineered.

I created three groups with assets for “Any,’ ” “Dark,” and “Tinted.” After I had everything tuned to satisfaction, I created with the help of ChatGPT a Python script that tags Appearance to the groups and is understood by Xcode. But the resulting file chokes Icon Composer.

I am not sure, what other developers do. I am sure, they have better tools inside Apple.

What a PITA! A half day of my life gone to get to the bottom of this. I should have just left it, now I feel compelled to fiddle with the assets to get them just right.

I also noticed that an automatic switch option to dark icons depended on System Appearance only shows up in Settings, when selecting the Dark icon. WHY is that option not visible when Any icons are selected.

Tahoe UX is a nightmare. I hope the new lead fixes it.

Hello, I already sent feature request about this icon, but it’s February 2026 now and we still don’t have new icon.

For graphic designer, this should take few minutes to make. So where is the problem?

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok, I downloaded Icon Composer and made it with final export on Pixelmator Pro.
Took me about 10 minutes and I’m not a graphic designer!

This does not work against a dark background.

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t use dark background, but it’s like every other dark icon.

I just checked. You are correct.

I should have checked first. On my own app, Icon Composer did not handle the two Appearances correctly. I ended up creating two groups in it, and then copying that icon file and making a script to modify the json file that Xcode understood.

    Really dumb.
