Continuous Journal View: Seamlessly Review Your Entries

    Brief Overview:

Day One is a powerful journaling app, but sometimes revisiting past entries feels fragmented, especially when trying to quickly review yesterday’s thoughts or multiple entries in one day. A continuous journal view would offer a smoother, more intuitive way to revisit and add to your entries, enhancing the journaling experience.

    Feature Request Details:

    1. Continuous View Mode:

    • Introduce a feature allowing users to view their journal in a continuous scroll format, similar to reading a long document.

    • Entries would be visually split by the date, making it easy to identify when each entry was made.

    2. Dynamic Splits for Same-Day Entries:

    • If multiple entries are made on the same day, include smaller separators within the same date, making each entry distinct while retaining a cohesive flow.

    3. Seamless Editing:

    • Allow users to edit entries directly within this continuous view, removing the need to navigate back and forth between separate notes.

    Why It’s Needed:

For users who like to reflect on recent entries, the current system of opening individual notes can be cumbersome. A continuous view mode would enable:

Faster navigation through recent thoughts and reflections.

    • A streamlined reading experience, fostering deeper engagement with the journal.

Smoother editing, making Day One even more intuitive and user-friendly.

    How It Could Work:

    • Users toggle the “Continuous View” option for a journal.

    • Entries are displayed in chronological order, automatically separated by dates.

    • As new entries are typed, they are split by the current date, with automatic sub-separators for additional same-day entries.

    Conclusion:

This feature could significantly enhance Day One’s appeal by bridging the gap between traditional journaling and digital convenience. Thank you for considering this suggestion!

Continuous view already exist. Just swipe to the right and you get the previous day, and so on.

Thank you very much for enlightening me on this @jcdichant !

I mostly use Day One on my laptop, so I can’t swipe.

That said, it’s really cool to know this works on the iPhone app. (I’d personally prefer scrolling in the opposite direction to go back to past entries, but hmm… it’s acceptable, I guess ^^).

With that said, don’t you feel there’s still a need for my feature request when using the app on a laptop, on your side?

  • Hi @romainfiorotto,

I can imagine having a continuous scroll through all entries on the desktop app, which sounds like a great idea! I’ve submitted a feature request on your behalf :)
