Charged $36 for texting jounal entries that didn’t even work

On Jun 12, I attempted to use Day One’s service with premium, where you can text to make a journal entry. As this is a premium feature, I expected this to be free. It never went though, which after reaching out to your support team +I was told it was because the entries were too long (which was never advertised and defeats the purpose), but I accepted it as a limitation of the service. However, I just recieved my phone bill for the month, and see that I was charged for each text I sent to the app, which was never disclosed to me, and because it was not sending, I kept trying to sync my journal and resend it, which means I have now incurred a $36 additional fee on my bill from sending texts from Canda to the USA. I am very upset that what was advertised as a feature of your free trial has ended up costing me this much. I decided not to sign up for the premium membership after my trial, because I could not afford it, and now I still have a large expense because of your app anyway. I am very upset, I live paycheck to paycheck and can not afford this charge. I did not know it would be charged as an american phone number and I don’t know how I will be able to pay this bill.

Can I please receive some support via email? I am feeling very frustrated with this situation.

  • Hello @lainiec99,

    Sorry for any confusion.

When using this feature from Canada, it is required to use WhatsApp in order for this to work.

If just sending texts from your default messaging app, then text rates would apply. This is mentioned in a text reply right after setting up the number to text.

You can read more about this feature here: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/tips-and-tutorials/text-messaging-to-day-one/

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

It did say there could be additional rates, but as I have a comprehensive plan, it should have mentioned international texting. Whatsapp was never mentioned, or given as an alternative when I signed up, or in the first text I recieved.

  • @lainiec99 I’ve just went through our documentation https://dayoneapp.com/guides/tips-and-tutorials/text-messaging-to-day-one/ and saw the mention that the phone number is a US number:

The text message number via this message is a US number.
