Can’t play audio notes (on Mac OS app) recorded on Apple Watch 10
-
I can play audio notes recorded on Apple Watch 10 when I play them on my Watch, and I can see that the status of these notes that is ‘Transferred’.
Unfortunatelly, on Day One (Mac desktop app) I can’t play them. The audio note is visible in desktop app, and I can see transfered file *.m4a, I can also see that file is 11 sec. long, but when I press the audio note/icon – it only blinks and can’t be played.
Does anybody got similar issue?
- Apple Watch app version: hmm, the newest on day Dec 15th 2024 (just downloaded on that day)
- Mac desktop app version: 2024.24 (1616)

Hello @buentigre,
Sounds like the audio may not be fully synced just yet. Are you using Day One on any other devices?
If you go to dayone.me, are you able to see and play the Audio file there?
-
Hi, thanks for reply. Indeed, I checked on other devices and the audio only works on Apple Watch (where it was recorded) and on iPhone. However, this recording cannot be played on Mac OS and on the web (dayone.me) – the recording is visible but does not work when tapped.

@buentigre If you record the audio from your iPhone, can it be played on the Day One Mac and Web?
-
Yes, audio recorded on iPhone can be played on Mac and web right away. And I just managed to play audio from Apple Watch on Mac and web too, BUT! as I wrote before, it is not possible in this path:
recorded on Apple Watch -> played on Mac/web, even after a few days it does not sync, even when you force “Sync now” on Mac
..however, as soon as we open the recording on iPhone, it is immediately available on Mac and web! We do not even have to play this recording on iPhone, it is enough for iPhone to refresh its Audio Recordings list, and every 2-3 seconds they are unlocked on Mac and web. Without opening Day One on iPhone, it is not possible to play audio from Apple Watch.
I noticed that on iPhone and Mac there are two types of audio icons: with a dark gray background and with a white one. Those with a dark gray background cannot be played, probably not synced yet, and those with a white background are ready to play. On the iPhone the icons are always white so they can be played, on the Mac they are dark gray until I open the recording or refresh the list of recordings on the iPhone. So it seems that the iPhone is somehow involved in the synchronisation of audio on Mac and the web.

@buentigre So far, we have been unable to replicate the issue. However, I have now opened a report so the developers can continue looking into this. I will also be emailing you to get diagnostics from your iOS app. Please keep an eye out for my message!

Hello @ruedikubli!
I did speak with the Apple team, and this is currently how it is programmed to work. The Apple Watch will sync with the iOS app and will need to be opened before the audio will be playable on any other devices.
They are going to look at ways this can be improved and see if it will be possible to have those audio entries work on Mac without having to open it on iOS first.
