cant load time machine backup

I am having trouble with time machine backup. I can load the old 5U8NS4GX82.dayoneapp2 folder ok, and when I open day one all my saved data is there.
As soon as I try and do anything (such as backup the data to my hard drive) all the data immediately disappears and I am left with a blank diary with no entries!
what am I doing wrong? I followed all the recommended steps.
