Cannot Enter New Locations into Journal Entries
-
This has been an ongoing issue for me. When using my iPhone I cannot enter in new locations when creating a journal entry.
For example, I’ve just been to a doctors appointment. When I entered the details while waiting to see the doctor, his clinic wasn’t in the list of either “nearby locations” or elsewhere.
There’s an instruction to drag and drop a pin, but doing that on an iPhone is difficult to do with any precision and in any case it didn’t do anything.
In the journal entry it shows two fields for location. The top one shows, as an example, Joe’s Diner and the second under the iPhone Location heading has a different location. Neither of the above are anywhere near the doctor’s clinic.
I typed it in the search bar but only got entries from other states which had the same words in it. In this case, it was the Cancer Care Centre that I was looking for, not say, United Cancer Treatment (fictitious name used as an example).
I zoomed in on the map, small as it is (why can’t it be expanded to a full screen window to make it easier for us to navigate, locate places, etc.?), but that’s all I can do.
It uses Apple Maps which here in Australia, is largely useless. Google Maps has the clinic displayed.
I can find a “nearby” location which may be miles away but shows up as “nearby” and I can name it but that’s pointless.
What I’d like to be able to do:- open maps (preferably Google) in a full screen Window
- Tap on a location to mark it for inclusion in the journal entry
- if it’s not on the map, then to tap on that location and to give it a name and add it to the location list or database.
If this is already available in the iPhone (or maybe even the iPad), please advise on how to access it.
In the Mac version I can zoom in on the map then right-click on a spot to use that location and to even name it if it already has a name that’s incorrect or not appropriate.
Thanks.

Oh, I forgot to mention. On the iPhone, sometimes you have two locations shown – one of which is correct, say the iPhone Location field at the time and the other location above it. The one above may be wrong but the one below is correct.
When tapping on the bottom one you get the option: “apply location history to entry” and if I tap on that it’s supposed to change the top entry to that one. But often it doesn’t. It’ll stay on the incorrect location which gets attached to the journal. -
Hello @marts57!

When creating an entry, what does your workflow look like? Typically, a location should automatically be added to the entry once it’s created. You should be able to tap on the location to change or search for a new location. I’ve done a bit of testing on my end, and I was also able to drop a pin on a new location to associate the entry with that new pin.
What happens when you try to do that when editing the entry?
The top one shows, as an example, Joe’s Diner and the second under the iPhone Location heading has a different location. Neither of the above are anywhere near the doctor’s clinic.
Were these locations close by or in completely different locations?

We can only display locations that are stored in Apple Maps. We use the Maps API and that is where Day One gets all its location information. Addresses and names.

I can definitely forward this feedback over to the team for future consideration.
As a workaround, if you have an address at a location that is not named, you can also add a name to it that is similar to Day One on Mac.

I’ve also tested this as well and the location name did change on my end. Can you confirm you’re using the latest version of Day One?

Thanks for the feedback. As for your questions, I believe that I’ve included everything that I experience in the original post. I’m not sure how to answer your questions.
And yes, I’m using the current DayOne version.

OK, I’ll try again.
- New Entry
- Enter the time as it’s a retrospective entry
- Then look at locations. Where I am for that time doesn’t display. Many other locations do, however, none of which are in my journal or that I’ve visited.
- I try to scroll around the stupidly small map window. There’s a drop-pin displayed somewhere other than where I am. I try to zoom in and to drop it on that location but it doesn’t work.
- I type my location into the search bar. It doesn’t come up. I cannot work out how to enter it in manually.
I’m guessing that in the US Apple Maps pretty much has every known spot there covered and is usable in DayOne. Outside of the US, however, that doesn’t appear to be the case, at least, here in Australia. But given that we’re such a small market in comparison I guess that we’re low on the Maps priorities. Google Maps, however, is more detailed.
At home, if I use the DayOne for Mac the process is much easier and I tend to enter retrospective entries there anyway.
Yesterday I was at the local pharmacy (or drug store I think you call them). I tried to enter a new entry but the pharmacy (a large national chain called “Chemist Warehouse”) wasn’t listed. Instead, I got nearby restaurants, a doctors clinic, a bank, street numbers, eg. 80-93 Smith Street and a health foods store in the list when trying to enter location. I gave up and used the doctors clinic instead. -
Thank you so much for all these details! It really helps us to hear exactly where the pain points are on this
I try to zoom in and to drop it on that location but it doesn’t work.
To drop the pin on a location, try long pressing on that spot on the map. I just gave this a go, and it seemed to work fine. I absolutely see though what you mean about the map being small for this process of scrolling around for the proper location. I can see how expanding it would make this manual process less painful.
I type my location into the search bar. It doesn’t come up. I cannot work out how to enter it in manually.
You may need to scroll down in the app to see the locations that match a typed address. Once again though, as I try it myself, I do see your point to how little space there can be for this action in the app.

I’m relieved to hear there’s one place that makes this a simpler process for you!
tried to enter a new entry but the pharmacy (a large national chain called “Chemist Warehouse”) wasn’t listed.
Checking this myself, I see how it could get complicated to find a match. Here’s how the process looked for me:
I typed in the location. Then I scrolled down in the little space of search results until I got the keyboard to disappear.

Then I could easily find all the matching “Chemist Warehouse” results:

I hope these details help! Thank you again for taking the time to let us know what’s not working for you here.

“To drop the pin on a location, try long pressing on that spot on the map. I just gave this a go, and it seemed to work fine.”
When I tried to drop the pin on the required location it kept moving to a different spot on the map.
Anyway, thanks for your suggestions. I’ve given up on it. I’m resigned to the fact that DayOne on the iPhone isn’t going to do what I want it to regarding locations and so on.If they don’t want to focus on this area for development then that’s fine, it’s their choice, I guess.
