Can not see total word counts through any method?

I have just noticed today (after I updated dayone through mac store) that I can not see the number of total words in my journals when I selected over 100 entries.

Well, there is not way to see this on ios version. I tried to the web version today and it said I can not select over 100 entries. Therefore, this mean that I can not have an idea about how much I have written over the past month (I have basically 200-300 entires per month) or year, or total entries.

I have been used DayOne for three years. From time to time there are small bugs but overall I am satisfied. What I really feel disappointed about is that some features are removed without noticing (not even in the update notice in the mac store, they simply just put “bug fixed”). I have been used the code block to generate tables for journaling, but that feature was removed on 2024. Now that the word count function has been removed, things are just getting worse and worse.

I do understand that the “total word counts” function might cause stuck issues. For me, I have to wait for ~5 seconds to get the number of 10k entries that I had. I guessed that is one of the reason to remove it. However, there are absolutely better ways to go around this. For instance, have a feature creating graph for total word counts (weekly, monthly, per journals, etc). Or only estimated numbers are provided. Overall, any other solutions are better than just canceling this feature without telling the customers.

Just notice that code block table feature have returned. Hopefully the total word counts functionality can be restored soon.

  • Hi @wisecat1431

You mentioned Mac, iOS, and web app here. Can you clarify if you’re seeing this issue on the MacOS app, the iOS app, or the web app (or all three?)

And to be clear, are you saying that you could previously select more than 100 entries and see the total word count for all selected entries? Do you recall the last time you were able to do that? This information will help us look into what has changed here.

    Thanks.

    Hi donnie,

    Thanks for the reply.

I have always been able to select more than 100 entries and see the total word counts for all the selected entries on my MacOS app since I used DayOne. I never able to do that on iOS nor the web app. In fact, more than 95% of my journaling was on MacOS and only 5% was on iOS. I only used the web app for testing when I encountered this counting issue and it gave me a warning that I can not select more than 100 entires. I never get this warning in MacOS app.

As for the time, I am not 100% sure about the exact time since I did not do this word counting very often. What I am 100% sure is that I was able to do that by the end of 2024. I have always been kept most of my apps up to date so this could happen when you release the updates in 2025 (there are 2025.1, 2025.1.1, 2025.2 and 2025.3). However, I have updated the MacOS app several days ago so it is very likely that the most recent update leads to this. My current version is 2025.3(1634). My intuition is that the most suspected version should be 2025.3. But the other three updates might also be possible.

Please help to fix this, thanks!

  • Hi @wisecat1431,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention and providing such detailed information. We appreciate you being a long-time Day One user and for your thorough explanation of the issue.

You’re correct – the ability to select more than 100 entries for word count on macOS was intentionally changed in version 2025.3. This change was implemented to address a freezing issue that was occurring with the menu when a large number of entries were selected. The change introduced a 100-item limit to prevent this freezing.

We understand this change impacts your workflow. We’ll keep your feedback in mind as we continue to improve the app and explore potential solutions that balance functionality and stability.

    Hi @staff-frank,

    Thanks for your reply.

I do understand that this implemented change is a solution for issues that might be encountered by other users. But I have to say that this freezing issue never occurs to many users like me. Therefore, it is introducing a new bug to the app rather than fixing one. BTW, I would have kept the app out of date if I am aware of this “fixing” update.

This affects my workflow heavily and I would really, really like to have this word count functionalities back, at least with a higher entries limits. For people who are interested in counting words through many entires, those entires are mostly likely been selected through a time frame, for instance, a month. In macOS app, there is a way to quickly select all the entries for specific month. It does not make sense that I can select monthly entries but does not have the ability to count their words. Now it would be a nightmare to do this simple task. This would the minimum I am asking. Plz help to fix this.

  • Hi @wisecat1431,

Thanks for your feedback and for explaining how this change affects your workflow. We understand your frustration with the current 100-entry limit for word count and other stats, and we appreciate you sharing your perspective.

We’ve been discussing internally about potential improvements. While we can’t provide a firm timeline for this improvement, we want to assure you that we’ve heard your feedback and are actively looking into solutions that balance performance and functionality. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work on this.
