Camera

    Hi there,

I have been a Day One user for around 12 years now.

Absolutely love it, but I’ve always found it weird that we can only take square photos using the camera in Day One.

Am I missing something there? Have been through the settings but can’t find anything. I’m using iOS.

I often want to take a photo just for Day One and not have it saved in my library so this means I have to use the native camera, add to my Day One entry, then go back to my camera roll and delete.

Please let me know if I’m missing a setting or if there’s a reason it’s this way.

    Thanks

  • We don’t currently offer a way to take photos in other aspect ratios. But I’ve gone ahead and forwarded this along to our developers as a feature request. I can’t offer an estimated timeframe or confirm that it will be implemented, but hopefully our developers will consider it soon.

    Cool, thanks Mike.

This is clearly a design choice and I’d love to know why. Curious more than anything.

I’m guessing it was just for the ‘polaroid look’ being trendy especially with the original Day One being released at a similar time to Instagram.

Fingers crossed for different aspect ratios soon!

I’ve been suggesting this for years, but DayOne has always responded with a sly, “Why do you need that? If you want to use landscape mode, just take a picture with the stock camera and load it. Is that inconvenient?” This is not a user-friendly answer at all, and I’m tired of them insisting on an outdated square camera that isn’t even used on Instagram, so I want to cancel my subscription several times a day.
