    proof here:

my question is, what happens to the images when i import it from iOS > Photos?

    They look compressed.

Is there a way to access the images inside the DayOne app through the CLI?

is there an API on how to facilitate exporting out the media?

  • Hi there!

As a premium user, you can reach out to us via email if needed as long as you use the same email as the one connected to your Day One account. That being said, we’re also happy to make this information available to all, so thank you for asking! Let’s review together:

my question is, what happens to the images when i import it from iOS > Photos?

You can enable the “Download All Media” option in Settings > Sync > Storage on iOS, allowing your photos to be imported and shown into Day One at their full resolution and quality. Otherwise, full-resolution images are stored in the cloud and downloaded on demand.

Is there a way to access the images inside the DayOne app through the CLI?

The CLI tool will only allow you to import files to Day One. There isn’t an option to export at the moment.

is there an API on how to facilitate exporting out the media?

You can download an export of your entries in JSON format which will include a media folder. Before taking the export, you’ll be given the option to download all your images if they aren’t stored on the device.

You’ll find this option if you navigate to Settings > Import/Export > Export Day One JSON (.zip) on iOS or File > Export > JSON on macOS. Select the option to include media.

Let us know if you run into any issues here.

    Cheers!

I’m sorry to say this, but DayOne seems to be compressing the images. What I see after importing an image from my iPhone to DayOne is definitely of lower quality immediately after sharing a photo to the app and after confirming the image is downloaded and full resolution. The colors and dynamic range are muted. The difference is stark on an OLED screen capable of displaying HDR.

  • Hi @stackersim, @walueg, and @sjwillis

Every photo imported into Day One is converted to JPEG format and resized to a maximum resolution of 2100 pixels, Premium users have the benefit of an increased resolution at 3200 pixels

The aspect ratio is maintained. We resize photos for more efficient sync and storage. At this size the average photo is about 700KB to 1.5MB.

When you take a photo using Day One on your iPhone or iPad, by default the original, full-resolution image is not saved to your Camera Roll. You can change this behavior in the Day One Settings > Advanced panel.
