App Freezes When Using with Magic Keyboard
-
After updating to iPadOs 18.2.1, I can no longer edit entries when my iPad Pro (M4, 13”) is attached to my Magic Keyboard. The app becomes entirely unresponsive and has to be closed and re-opened. Everything works fine when not attached to the Magic Keyboard. I have restarted the app as well as the iPad to see if it fixes, and nothing resolves this issue.

im having this problem too, but it started when I was still on iPad OS 18.2. I updated to 18.2.1 to see if it would help but it didn’t. I’m on the latest version of Day One.

I am having the same problem. I’m using an iPad Pro. 18.2.1. when I don’t use my magic keyboard, it types fine but as soon as I connect it to my Magic keyboard, it automatically phrases, and I have to, like Brunansky, have to FORCE quit the app and then start all over again.

Hi @brunansky, @partigiana, and @guybhabhi,
This is a known issue affecting some users and we are investigating it. Thanks for your patience.
Would you mind sending us diagnostics from devices where the issue is occurring?
-
I’ve just done this, but I had to quit the app then restart and then send the entry link subsequently so I don’t know if the information will contain what you need. Fingers crossed.

I am also having this issue and it is REALLY frustrating as I can type easier and faster on the Magic Keyboard than the iPad keyboard and (YUCK) my phone. Hoping a fix comes VERY soon or that we are credit our fees for the inconvenience. Thank you.

@partigiana @triumphsecretly3ebcb9409f and for others who come across here, we wanted to let you know that our developers have fixed an issue causing the Day One iOS app (particularly on iPad) to crash when using an external keyboard.
The fix should be available from the next app update (2025.3), so please keep an eye out for the update and let us know if y’all still have the same issue after updating the app.
In the meantime, as a temporary workaround, you can disable Stage Manager on your Day One iPad and the external keyboard should work without causing the Day One app to crash.
Thanks all!

Oh dear, it’s happening to me now. With magic keyboard, I can enter one letter and then I can’t.
I’m on iPad Pro M4, iOS 18.3.2.
thanks.

Update. I disabled Multi-tasking in settings. (Previously I’d had Split View and sliding checked. Not stage manager.)
Now, I’m working with a template for the entry. I can enter text now, but sometimes I cannot select a word. when I do, the pop up menu appears (cut, copy, etc), but the thing I’ve selected/highlighted doesn’t show as highlighted anymore. I can’t do more with the selection tool. It seems to do that with text from the template a bit more than with new text I’m entering.
Thanks!

Hi @carolineclarke7,
Thank you for your report. We can confirm a bug with the latest version of Day One (v.2025.6) iOS app on iPad + Magic Keyboard. When using the Magic Keyboard to type entries on iPad, the timeline view steals focus from the entry.
I’ve now reported your issue to the developers. While we do not have an exact timeline for when the fix will be completed, I can assure you that it’s on our radar. In the meantime, I recommend disconnecting the Magic Keyboard, or using the web app instead at https://dayone.me. Thanks!

I’m very frustrated that after several months, the issue with iPad+Magic Keyboard still isn’t resolved. I’ve disabled multi-tasking as recommended above and still having the problem. I contacted Day One support who told me the issue has been “forwarded to the developer team” and no one knows when it will be addressed. The app is barely functional with this problem. I’m ready to cancel my subscription and try another journaling app. Open to recommendations.

Hi @donjrath,
I contacted Day One support who told me the issue has been “forwarded to the developer team” and no one knows when it will be addressed.
The issue has been reported to our team, and it is actively being looked into.
The issue with the Magic Keyboard was resolved in a recent update but has since resurfaced.
Our engineers have worked on adding some extra logging, which will be added to version 2025.10. This should help us track down the issue faster. We will do our best to keep you posted once the issue is resolved again.

I am also now seeing this issue with my iPad Pro using the Magic Keyboard. I had not seen this issue before today. It only seems to happen when I have the left sidebar list open and I select an entry to edit (or brand new entry). I start typing and I get a word or two written and then the edit entry seems to loose focus and I cannot type anymore. I have tried this with another BT keyboard (without a trackpad on it like the Magic Keyboard has) and I see the same behavior. But typing with the onscreen keyboard without an external keyboard connected works fine.
Apple Magic Keyboard Folio for iPad Pro (10th Gen). I have the latest iOS (18.5) and the latest Day One version (2025.11 2627).

Thanks for confirming this with us, @myzenlife
If you can email us your diagnostics via the app, it will help us debug this matter further. Our developers made improvements to track down the cause of the issue, as we are hoping to release a fix for it soon.

I’m having a similar issue with HOU iPad Pro keyboard. No issues until today (after the new software was released?) Initially I had issues with sync, and those resolved after closing and reopening and restarting my iPad and keyboard. Now whenever I try to type I get a few words in and then the app just stops responding. Help please!!!

Hello @juliab725!
Can we have you make sure you’re using the latest 2025.13 update? This should have a fix for this. The link below should take you directly to that update.

Once updated, please let us know if you’re still running into that issue.
