App freezes when I try to start an entry
-
I use this app for my daily Bible devotionals. Last night and this morning the app freezes when I try to apply the template I use. I also tried just typing out my template and it freezes at the first letter I type. I tried deleting some old entries thinking maybe it was a memory issue, but the same thing happened. I switched over the native Notes app on iPhone, but hope to migrate back to Day One. I also power cycled my phone, but it didn’t fix anything.

Hello @n7b9wx8pvq,
Can you confirm what version you are currently using?
Please double-check that the latest version is downloaded on all devices using Day One.
- iOS: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/day-one-journal-private-diary/id1044867788
- Mac: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/day-one/id1055511498?mt=12
- Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dayoneapp.dayone&hl=en_US&gl=US
If you need to update, please do so and let us know if you’re seeing the same freeze.

Same here. I’ve just upgraded to 2025.1.1 today (iPad Pro). Now I can’t write anything at all. The app is frozen. Restarting the app or even the device doesn’t help.
-
More info: Removing the app and reinstalling it also doesn’t help. The freezing problem persists.
The app worked fined until the update, it also works fine on my iPhone. It’s clearly problem with the latest version on iPadOS.
Unfortunately, my work MacBook doesn’t allow custom apps installation so I won’t check it for macOS. -
Hello, I am experiencing the same behavior on iPad Pro with 2025.1.1 App freezes upon new entry or attempting to edit an entry.
IOS 18.2.1
Day One 2025.1.1

I am experiencing the same thing. The app is entirely unresponsive on my iPad. Closing and reopening the app does not help. I have the most recent version of the app installed.
-
More info: the app unfreezes when used without a keyboard. So the culprit may be iPad Pro keyboard integration in the new iPad version. Needless to say, writing a journal without the keyboard is cumbersome, so it’s a workaround, not a solution.

My app is totally non-responsive. It doesn’t work with the integral digital iPad keyboard nor does it work with my external Magic Keyboard. Swiping actions don’t even work.
As a premium Subscriber, I would expect this to be fixed as soon as possible.
-
2025.2 update is still unresponsive and freezes, when using the iPad keyboard attachment.

I am using Day One Version 2025.2 (2575) and the app is being non-responsive once I try to start typing in an entry. I have a 2024 iPad Pro M4 with a Magic Keyboard.
I have tried restarting the iPad with just pushing the power button, and then swiping to turn off. I have also done a forced reboot with the up/down(sound)/power button hold approach. I also checked to see if I had the newest version, which I didn’t so I got that and it’s still not working properly.
-
I can still use it on my phone, and it does quickly update over to my iPad. However, it’s just not convenient without the keyboard.
-
Ah good(ish)… at least I’m not going bonkers – same issue here – works fine on iPhone 16 and fine on web app – just on iPad it’s freezing
-
For those in this thread or who happen to come across here, we wanted to let you know that our developers have fixed an issue causing the Day One iOS app (particularly on iPad) to crash when using an external keyboard.
The fix should be available from the next app update (2025.3), so please keep an eye out for the update and let us know if y’all still have the same issue after updating the app.
Thanks all!

Helllo, I am having the same issue as above. However, this began BEFORE the new update. I have updated both the app and my iPad, restarted my iPad and I still have the issue where as soon as I click on something or try to type, Day One crashes.
-
Is anyone from DayOne paying attention to this issue? I’ve been reaching out to them on Twitter. They said several days ago that this freezing issue will be fixed with the next update; however, when I ask when the next update will be released, I get no response. It seems that this is affecting many people, and DayOne is not doing anything about it or communicating with customers about what’s going on (unless I’m missing something somewhere). I have used and enjoyed this app for years, but this complete lack of customer service is incredibly disappointing.

@staff-fred I see your comments above from 4 days ago saying the same as what I got on Twitter — “the issue is fixed and be on the lookout for the next update to come out”. WHEN WILL THAT NEXT UPDATE COME OUT!? It’s been four days since your message. This is an app that people use on a daily basis and it’s NOT WORKING, so saying it’s fixed and that we’ll experience that fix “soon” but then no word for 4 days is really frustrating for your regular users.

their release cadence is usually every two weeks. Sometimes a “hot fix” is released more quickly. Rarely do devs (from any app I use) release an update right before a weekend.
