Align links to other entries when importing a journal

Let’s say I export a journal, and that journal has a number of entries that link to other entries in the same journal. If I want to then import it into a NEW journal how would I get all the links to point to the NEW entries they correspond with?

I tried to work around this by manually editing the export JSON after I imported it so it had the new journal ID in the link URLs and then re-importing it, but that just created a copy of the imported journal. My understanding was that it should overwrite or “merge” the journal as long as the files have the same name, and any existing entries would be overwritten if they have the same entry ID in the JSON.

  • Hi @roryap,

Just so we’re on the same page, would you share more information about your setup and how exactly you’re linking the journal?

My understanding was that it should overwrite or “merge” the journal as long as the files have the same name, and any existing entries would be overwritten if they have the same entry ID in the JSON.

JSON imports will always be imported as a new journal. We don’t currently have automatic merge options, but you can follow this guide to merge duplicate entries: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/tips-and-tutorials/how-do-i-merge-two-journals-together/

That said, would you share the goal of exporting and re-importing journals as you specified here? There might be a better way to achieve what you’re looking for. Understanding your goal will help us assist you the best way we can.
